What is First Class? Are there different classes of service?

There are two classes of service on THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride at Whippany, NJ – First Class and Coach. First Class passengers enjoy table or lounge seating in an upgraded rail car and receive an exclusive THE POLAR EXPRESS™ ceramic mug to take home. Coach seating is a traditional layout on standard rail cars and includes a branded plastic tumbler. All passengers receive hot chocolate and a cookie. Children receive a silver sleigh bell from Santa.

Are seats assigned?

Seats are not assigned, only the car is assigned. Upon boarding your assigned car you will be escorted by an attendant to your seats. All passengers in your party will be placed in the same car together. The attendant will help you with arrangements as necessary.

What ages constitute a child ticket?

Children are ages 2 to 11. Under 2 is free provided that they are on someone’s lap.

Do infants ride for free?

Children under two may ride for free provided they are not occupying a seat and ride on an adult’s lap.

What is THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride?

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is a re-creation of the classic children’s story on board a real train. Passengers are served hot chocolate and a treat by dancing chefs, enjoy a reading of the book by Chris Van Allsburg, and receive the first gift of Christmas (a silver sleigh bell) after Santa boards the train at the North Pole. Attendants lead passengers in caroling on the return trip to Whippany Station. Each passenger also receives a souvenir tumbler with their hot chocolate to take home.

How long is the experience? When should we arrive?

The entire experience at Whippany Station is roughly two hours in length. It is required that guests arrive at least one hour prior to their departure time. This allows time to park at a designated (ASSIGNED) offsite parking lot, ride a shuttle to the station, and and check in at the Will Call desk in the Whippany Station. Boarding will begin 30 minutes prior to listed departure times. The train ride itself is one hour and fifteen minutes in length.

There will be shuttles every 15 minutes to take you to the event.  The train is on a strict schedule and will leave at the scheduled departure time from the station, please make sure all of your guests arrive in plenty of time to board the train. Please make sure to go to your assigned (Event Time) parking lot.  You will not be allowed entrance into any other parking lot.

Where do we go once we arrive at Whippany Station?

A Will Call desk is located in the Whippany Station and passengers should be prepared to check in prior to boarding. Guests receive THE POLAR EXPRESS™ souvenir golden ticket at check-in. Boarding will begin 30-minutes prior to departure. Trains will not be held for those arriving after their scheduled departure time. Trains depart and return to the same location.

How soon should I book tickets?

It is recommended that reservations are made as soon as your group knows which date and time you would like to attend. Tickets are expected to sell out quickly for this popular event.

Can we bring or purchase The Polar Express book?

Passengers are encouraged to bring their copy of The Polar Express to read along with during the ride.

Is the event wheelchair accessible?

Handicapped accessibility:  The event consists of historic railcars that do not have ADA access. However, the Morristown & Erie Railway will do everything possible to assist our guests. We have one car that has limited space available to secure wheel chairs and if notified in advance we will arrange to have your family sit in this area.

Wheel Chairs: We do have limited space available on the train for your wheel chair and dedicated seating for your family, but, you must be able to navigate three moderately steep stairs into the train. The wheelchair must be the light portable type.

Where can I find food allergy information?

Before booking your tickets, please inform a reservations representative if anyone in your party has a food allergy or special dietary needs. Please also inform your car’s onboard staff members as you board the train. Cookies and hot chocolate are served on the train. The cookies do not contain nuts, but may come from a facility that processes nuts. The hot chocolate contains dairy. Anyone with a food allergy or special dietary needs is welcome to bring an alternate treat or drink item on board. Limited quantities of cookies free of nuts, dairy, and egg from a certified nut-free facility will also be available on each train.

Are there restrooms on board the train?

Yes, as well as on the premises.

What should my family wear?

Families are encouraged to wear warm pajamas just like passengers from THE POLAR EXPRESS™ book and film. Passengers will spend time on an unheated platform as they board and disembark from the train, so appropriate winter attire is also recommended.

Are tickets refundable?

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride are NOT refundable.

Can I change my reservation to a different date or time?

If seats are available on another date/train, our reservations agents will do their best to accommodate your request. However, no guarantees can be made that your reservation can be changed.

Will the event take place if there is snow or other inclement weather?

Trains will continue to run in snow and other weather conditions. However, trains may be cancelled or postponed at Morristown and Erie Railway’s discretion due to weather or operational considerations. The event may also be cancelled or postponed if the State Highway Patrol closes major roads and freeways due to snow. Full refunds will be offered in these scenarios.

Can we purchase The Polar Express™ merchandise?

There will be merchandise available in the gift shop located inside Whippany Station for purchase before and after show times.  Cash Only.

Is there a Lost and Found?

Morristown and Erie Railway is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. So please be aware of all your items at all times.

Photo Opportunities?

There will be plenty of photo opportunities onboard the train and during the entirety of the train ride with our Professional Photographers.  Your pictures will be available for purchase online.  Please make sure to check your individual cards given to you by the photographers for available pictures to purchase.

No Alcohol Policy

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is a family-friendly event and no alcohol is sold or allowed on board the train. Intoxicated passengers or those found in possession of alcohol will be removed from the event without refund.
